PROPOSAL ON 2 DAYS WORKSHOP ON THE CHALLENGES IN THE ROAD TRANSPORT SECTOR, NATIONAL TRANSPORT POLICY, NATIONAL ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATIONS, NIGERIA ROAD SAFETY STRATEGY AND THE ENVISAGED GOVERNMENT INTERVENTIONS – THE NEED FOR APPROPRIATE HARMONIZATION FOR EFFECTIVE AND SAFE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION.

We use this opportunity to commend you for your concern and crucial plans to support the Road Transport Sector. We wish you a resounding success.

Road Transportation constitutes over 70% of the entire mode of transportation in the Rural and Urban Areas of Nigeria. Despite this, it is the most neglected and disorganized Sector in Nigeria, thereby exposing most of the Citizens to preventable Safety and Security hazards among other hardships. In addition to the challenges, the rate of Road Traffic Crashes, injuries, and Deaths in Nigeria still remains one of the highest globally.

It was in view of this that the Federal Ministry of Transportation, with the relevant stakeholders, designed the National Transport Policy/Bill with the goal of making “effective decisions concerning the allocation of transportation resources, including managing and regulating existing transportation activities” (awaiting the consent of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria).

As the Federal Government is planning some vital interventions in Public Transportation, there is an urgent need for all the Stakeholders in the Road Transport System to come together so as to streamline strategic action plans to more effectively complement the efforts of the Federal and State Governments towards ensuring an adequate, seamless, safe, environmentally friendly, efficient, and affordable “integrated transport system within the framework of a progressive and competitive market economy”.
